Quality Time Activities

Most of us would like to spend more time with our kids; but with all the demands on our time- school, work, friends, after-school activities- it may seem like we're constantly driving from activity to activity with no real time to connect with our loved ones.

Each month, the Family Focus section will feature a new activity that you can try out with your kids. These activities are designed to encourage you to spend quality time with your kids and to open up the lines of communication. The activities will also help to reinforce those important character traits and build your child's self-esteem.

July Activity - Red, White and Blue Bark

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz. bright white candy melts
  • 6 oz. royal blue candy melts
  • 6 oz. red candy melts
  • Red, white and blue M&M’s
  • Handful of Oreo cookies crushed into bite size pieces
  • Red white and blue sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Place oreo cookies into a resealable plastic bag, seal and gently hit with rolling pin to break cookies into pieces.
  2. Line a 11x15” pan with aluminum foil and spray lightly with cooking spray
  3. Place a small saucepan with about 1 inch of water on the stove and heat on low until barely simmering. Pour bright white candy melts in a large glass bowl (that fits inside the saucepan so that the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water).
  4. Place bowl over the saucepan creating a double boiler. Use a rubber spatula to stir candy melts until melted and smooth.
  5. Pour red candy melts into separate microwavable bowls and microwave in 30-45 second intervals until most of the way melted.
  6. Pour melted white candy melts into the pan and smooth into an even layer.
  7. Alternate drizzling red and blue candy melts onto the white in vertical layers.
  8. Using a small wooden skewer or butter knife, swirl in a figure eight pattern to swirl the red and blue into white. Repeat over entire pan.
  9. Sprinkle on oreo pieces, M&M’s, and sprinkles
  10. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours, or until hardened.
  11. Lift edges of aluminum foil and remove bark. Break into pieces and enjoy!
